Walk harmoniously and stand more safely

Benefits at a glance

Walk naturally

The FreeWalk enables a virtually natural gait. Compensating movements required with conventional orthoses are no longer necessary, relieving strain on your joints and back. You require less energy for walking and are able to travel longer distances.

Sit down comfortably

Your orthosis has to support you in many everyday situations. You can sit comfortably with the FreeWalk. Depending on your physical abilities, you can unlock the orthosis dynamically with a body movement or by hand.

Easy to put on

Sit down, slide the foot component of the FreeWalk orthosis into the shoe and then just put your foot in the shoe. Then place the orthosis onto your leg. The FreeWalk features practical quick-release closures that allow for easy fastening of the orthosis.

Good fit

Your orthopaedic technician manufactures the FreeWalk orthosis according to your individual measurements.

Pleasant to wear

The soft padding made of skin-friendly material feels comfortable all day. You can clean it with warm water and soap.

Nearly invisible

The FreeWalk is lightweight with a slim design. You can wear it under normal clothing. It is inconspicuous and virtually invisible to others.

Functionality

Technology

The FreeWalk orthosis is controlled by a connection between the orthotic knee joint, the orthotic ankle joint and the insole that guides your foot. Integrated into your natural gait cycle, the lock in the orthotic knee joint disengages and you can freely swing your leg. The orthotic knee joint automatically locks itself again when you swing your leg before stepping down. You maintain control over your orthosis and use it consciously.

As an option for those who sometimes tire more quickly due to their physical condition, a switch has been developed that allows you to permanently unlock or lock your joint in addition to the FreeWalk function (locked stance phase, unlocked swing phase). With the three-way switch, you can use the FreeWalk orthosis entirely according to your personal requirements and condition.

Orthosis training

You can only reap the full benefits from a high-quality, modern fitting if you are trained in the use of the product. You will take your first steps with the FreeWalk during a fitting session with your technician. He or she will explain in detail the functionality and handling during daily use.

Then, together with your technician or a physiotherapist / occupational therapist, you will practise walking in a variety of situations, for example on slopes or stairs. Your technician will prepare an individual training programme for you. It is important for you to train the correct movement patterns in order to avoid developing malpositions. You will also work together to practise sitting down and standing up, as well as putting on the orthosis and taking it off.

FAQ

  • How do I care for my orthosis?

You can simply clean the closures and pads with warm water and ph-neutral soap. Your medical supply company can also replace the components if they are very dirty. In general, it is recommended to have the orthosis inspected by your orthopaedic technician every 6 months.

  • Can I shower with the orthosis?

No, but with the Aqualine orthosis system from Ottobock, a waterproof walking aid is available which is designed especially for wet conditions. All of the components used are designed for contact with water.

  • How long does it take before I can walk with my Free Walk?

Naturally this can vary depending on your physical condition and fitness. The more you train with your orthosis, the sooner you will experience success.

  • Can I drive a car with the FreeWalk?

It is not possible to make any specific recommendation. You must be able to safely control any vehicle for which you require a driving licence and insurance, or which is used in traffic. This ability when wearing a FreeWalk is determined on a case-by-case basis. You are required to observe national and state laws.
